Our Cosmos & The Colors We Wear

— Written by Josh Lee —

While the cosmos and its affect on us is still a mystery, we know that colors and our perceptions of color affects our mood, manifests as stimulants to our senses, and change how we perceive the world around us. We know warmer colors stimulate our appetite, while cooler colors do the opposites. Subsequently, restaurants use red and yellow to make us hungrier, while gyms use blues to mitigate the appetite and to have us perceive that the facilities are clean.

We've done our best scouring sources from different cultures, beliefs, and dropped in a dash of science and art to curate the appropriate power colors for each sign of the Zodiac calendar.

What's a power color? Urban Dictionary defines it as: "The color a person looks the best in. You can easily notice a power color when it looks great with their complexion or they tend to wear it a lot. This color usually makes the person glow and, generally speaking, the person gets a lot of compliments when they wear that color." In some cultures, wearing the right color brings fortune or luck. We like to believe that color can change the outlook of a person on a given day and that we MAKE our own luck.

The Colors of the Cosmos Chart of power colors and their corresponding zodiac signs.

We've broken down the hues in Kelvin - a unit of measure used often in lighting a home or space to correspond to the daylight and function of a particular room. In practice, for example, a room is often used during midday and it really requires concentration and work in front of a computer monitor, the lighting should be cooler (higher on the Kelvin scale). If you want to create a more relaxing or sleepier mood, go lower on the scale towards the warmer colors.

Note: You'll notice we're missing a couple of zodiac signs - namely Libra, Leo, Cancer, and Sagittarius. That's because we currently don't have any robes in these corresponding colors! No worries, as they will come soon.

The Zodiac calendar starts with Aries, which is tied to the planet Mars. This is confusing, because only the planet refers to the Roman god of war, while the Zodiac for Aries refers to Apollonius' Jason and his Argonauts - where they were tasked with retrieving a golden fleece from a flying ram named Chrysomallus. The golden ram rescued a pair of sacrificial children to be rewarded by its father, Poseidon, by becoming a constellation in the sky.

If you are a child of this zodiac sign, your blood may boil hotter than most, as you are the epitome of the fire element - your power color is red. If you need to be in the mood where you feel like an unstoppable force, rock that red. However, we advise against painting your walls red, as there are rumors that it causes madness (probably not true, but keep it safe ya'll). Red inherently has a duality - associated with the madness of anger and with romance. Nothing worth anything is ever dull.

Red is the ultimate cure for sadness.

Regarded as the most ancient of all of the Zodiacs, the bull is connected with Venus and the goddess Hestia, the protector of the home. The sacred bull appears in almost all historical mythologies multiple times - and while we, today, often overlook the beast, it was very much revered for many generations as a hallowed symbol that represented peace, stability, stubbornness, and comfort.

A child of Taurus may seem like a homebody, but they are actually natural hustlers. Nothing is more noble than people who put their whole heart into their duty. If this is you, your power color is green - the very same color as growth and money and in your case, money does grow on trees. Go get that paper. Taurus people understand the importance of planting roots and being an anchor for those around them.

I can breathe where there is green. Green grows hope. It keeps my heart beating and helps me remember who I am.

Like other Zodiac signs, the roots of Gemini are extremely ancient. They date back to the dawn of civilization to Mesopotamian cultures. While today, the birthing of identical twins is a common biological occurrence, to the ancients, it was either regarded as divine or ominous. To the Babylonians, the great twins were regarded as the entities responsible for pestilence, plague, and the underworld. To the Greeks, it was a tale of two half-brothers from different fathers. The brother Castor died because he was mortal, the immortal half-brother Pollux pleaded with his father, Zeus to allow his dead brother to share in his own immortality. Hence, Zeus covered the sky with the two of them for all eternity. Geminis are associated with Mercury and the Goddess Athena.

Geminis are all about transformation and change. When most would hunch over the difficulties in their life, a Gemini always finds a way and isn't shy to ask for help. During these changes, they seek wisdom and clarity - this is often represented by light or the sun. Hence, if you're a Gemini seeking a new truth, your power color is yellow. It's no secret that the ancients associated the sun with gold - which you will see peppered around the ruins of temples dedicated to the gods. Geminis are scrappy and are not easily swayed by the difficulties of major change - it just means it's the next major milestone is just around the corner.

Virgo is the maiden, or virgin - which is bizarre to be so specifically depicted amongst the beasts and elements of the zodiac. Nevertheless, if you are familiar with the Judeo-Christian emphasis on the virgin Mary, you may be surprised to know that the mother and the child imagery existed even in pagan beliefs. In the Greek pantheon, it was depicted by Astraea - the virgin goddess of justice, innocence, purity and precision. It was said, during the age of man, the gods had no longer walked amongst mankind - but Astraea stayed late until the Iron Age, no doubt to give us poor humans some love during hard times. When she felt like her work was done, she ascended to the heavens to become the star-maiden. It is also said that she would return one day, bringing along the Golden Age of mankind, a utopian world where she is the ambassador.

A child of Virgo is associated with a nurturing demeanor, sensitivity, empathy, pragmatism, logic, systematic thinking, and perfectionism. If you're a detail-oriented, maternal, super grounded Virgo, your power color is Brown. The Virgo is often someone that others lean on - and always seems to have their life in order. They are perfect in every way. While this may seem like it may be intimidating, everyone still feels comfortable around a Virgo as they are comfortable in their own skin to give some TLC to someone who needs it. Everyone needs a Virgo in their lives.

God has a brown voice, as soft and full as beer.

Scorpio is the constellation resembling the scorpion, with a story tied to Orion, the hunter. This constellation is more ancient than the Greeks as well, however - with ties to the Babylonians who had designated these stars as the "(creature with a) burning sting." In some descriptions, Libra's were included in the constellation as Scorpio's claws. To the Greeks, the scorpion was a tool to assassinate the proud hunter, Orion, who was the son of Poseidon and regarded as the sexiest man alive. He and Artemis would often hunt together, which made Apollo extremely jealous. Apollo pleaded with Gaia, that Orion had pledged to hunt all the animals of the earth - and asked to kill him before that happens. Gaia summoned a large scorpion to sting Orion, leading to his death. Today you can see Scorpio continuing to chase down Orion in the sky.

There is inherent tragedy, mystery, conflict, and darkness to the origins of Scorpio. This drama of unapologetic gods revolving around a simple sexy hunter is exactly appropriate for Scorpios. If your identity is shrouded in mystery and peppered with moments of sophistication, your power color is black. Scorpio is associated with Pluto and Hades, the alternatives in Greek and Roman mythology for the keepers of the underworld. Black in cultures have many dualities - the color of bereavement/mourning, sadness, depression and death. On the other side of this coin, it is also a sign of prestige, sophistication, and elegance. While some may shun one or the other descriptions, Scorpios embrace both - as black represents everything and nothing. It is the only color on the kelvin scale to represent no light.

I love black because it affirms, designs and styles. A woman in a black dress is a pencil stroke.

The Capricorn is a hybrid best - also known as a chimera, a single organism that holds more than one distinct genotype. In this case, it's a goat, with the tail of a fish. This beast references one the oldest Zodiac mythos' - to the Sumerian god, Enki. Enki was a the god of water, knowledge, mischief, crafts, magic, and creation. Enki was one of the Anunnaki, or the gods tasked with the creation of man and overseeing earth.

A child of the Capricorn is similar to Enki - strong, ambitious, practical, witty, all-business, and strong rhetoricians. Some see Capricorns to be extremely cold, but they are actually quite caring of others - they just don't easily express it...while they are calm and collected, it's often that they are surrounded in chaos. When a Capricorn does let go of their business attitude, wild things happen. The Capricorn is associated with Saturn and Apollo, the greek god of the sun, music, dance, truth, and healing. If you're a buttoned-up, closet wildchild of the Capricorn constellation, your power color is grey. Grey conveys maturity, reliability, and practicality. In psychology, it also represents nuance and wisdom, the complex areas that most people have a hard time grasping.

The fundamental grey which differentiates the masters, expresses them and is the soul of all color.

Listen While Try On: "You Need To Calm Down" By Taylor Swift

Aquarius refers Ganymede, a young royal Trojan hotty that the gods abducted to be a cup-bearer to Zeus - hence, it's an example of homoerotic courting rituals in Greek culture. Zeus was so seduced with the young man, he offered immortality and job to aid in the Olympian parties. The image of the constellation immortalizes Ganymede pouring liquid out of his container.

While there are some darker aspects to this myth, the brightness and dynamic nature of romance and youth is absolutely an aspect of the Aquarius. It also represents life, change, and personal evolution. If you find your life to be as energetic & exciting as the ocean and the sky, may be an Aquarius, and your power color is blue. It is no surprise that aside from skin tones, blue is the most commonly used hue on the internet - as it exudes progress and excitement in all of us. There is also some speculation that the human eye was not able to perceive the color blue until much later in our history, and that its vibrance to us is a result of recent evolution.

Blue suggests the sea and sky, and they, after all, are in actual, visible nature what is most abstract.

Pisces is easily recognizable in any romance language as the word for "fish." It's significance comes from a ancient Greek allegory of a fish/shark that aided Aphrodite and Eros (aka Cupid) hide from the monster Typhon (who was sent from Gaia to kill the gods). Aphrodite and Cupid transformed into a small egg, which the fish nudged in the Euphrates river to safe ground. Aphrodite, in her gratitude, later peppered the night sky with the Pisces constellation.

The child of the Pisces is spiritual, creative, imaginative, compassionate, sensitive, lucky, and intuitive. If you are full of inner and outer beauty, and love people, you may be a Pisces, and your power color is cerulean. Given that you are in the cooler part of the spectrum, you share some characteristics with water and sky types, and while you may not have all the riches of the world, you often think of others before yourself. You are a creature of compassion and empathy.

But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.
